Lighting fixtures not only help hold the light bulbs but play a role in enhancing spaces by adding the decorative element. Whether you are replacing or revamping, it is a simple process and you can be enlightened reading this article. The two things you will need to carry out this process is time and a few tools.

When to replace?

Usually light fixtures do not need to be replaced often, but it has a mere impact on your taste and you may want to change it from time to time or if it is outdated you can opt for a new one. Sometimes you may want a new fixture that can connect to smart home devices like alexa, google home or more.

You can upgrade your fixtures without replacing it by adding new and additional chains, shades or more. Not only that but you can buy new bulbs to replace and more.

But safety first

Anytime you are working with electricity you need to be very careful as there is a major risk of an electrical shock. It is best to turn off the power to any circuits you are working with. Also it is best to read the instructions to install any element to prevent things from going wrong. Always be properly equipped.

Instructions

Turn the Power Off

See the light you want to replace and switch it on. Go to your breaker box and ensure the respective breaker is turned off. Then see if the light is off as it will indicate that the main switch is off.

Remove the Light Fixture

Usually there are two or three knobs that you have to unscrew and remove. Softly unscrew and remove, do not put a lot of pressure as it can damage. You might need a helping hand when you are disconnecting. It is best not to leave the wires hanging.

Ensure the Power is Off

As to double check, get a non-contact voltage tester to make sure that the power is off. Touch the wires with the tester. If the tester turns green then that means the power is off and it is safe to work with.  If it is red that means the power is on.

Disconnect the Wiring

It would be best to take a picture first to ensure that you put the fixture back in its original position. First step would be to twist the nuts and screws counterclockwise to remove them. Dispose off the wire nuts as they cannot be reused. Then twist the wires counterclockwise to disconnect and lastly remove the light fixtures.

Remove the Mounting Bracket

All the fixtures come with their mounting bracket. Mostly they are attached to the wiring junction box, but at times they can also be attached to the wall. Carefully remove the brackets and the screws. There might be holes left, if the new fixture does not cover them then you might have to patch them.

Install the New Mounting Bracket

When installing the mounting bracket read the instructions that come along with it. As mostly the brackets are installed using two screws into the junction box.

Connect the Wiring

Mostly there are three wires. One being black the other is white and the other is bare wire. These colors will connect to the junction box accordingly. Wire strippers might be required in order to remove ½ inch of the plastic jacket if needed. You need to twist the wires into the new wire nuts in a clockwise direction. After the twisting just carefully tuck the wiring inside the junction box.

Mount the New Light Mixture

Now is the time to mount, read the instruction manual and place the light into the mounting bracket accordingly.

Install the Light Bulbs and Trim

Trim is to cover the hole in the wall or just serves the purpose of being a decorative item. Mostly lights do come with it. To install, read the manual for instructions to ensure that you are doing the job right and responsibly to save you time and for precise results.

Test the Light Fixture

Finally, you have made it. After following all of the above processes, turn the breaker back on and see if the light is working. If it turns on you are all set to use and enjoy.
